The number of people leaving home to socialize or eat and drink has plummeted in recent weeks with the entry into force of stricter coronavirus restrictions, figures show

Almost half (43%) of adults surveyed by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) said they meet friends and family outside of their home less often

A quarter of adults said they visited a restaurant, cafe, bar or pub between September 30 and October 4

This percentage is down from the 30% who said they visited reception establishments from September 9 to 13, while almost 40% did so between late August and early September

The figures, which come amid an increase in local lockdown restrictions, are published in a new weekly ONS newsletter designed to help understand the impact of the coronavirus on British society

Among those who had left their home to go to reception establishments as part of the most recent survey, 7% said they always or often ordered at the counter, compared to 12% the previous week

Around 27% of the 1,573 people surveyed said they had not socialized with anyone outside their household in the past seven days, compared to 25% in previous weeks

Since the investigation was conducted, stricter restrictions on hospitality have come into force in parts of the country, with pubs and restaurants in the Scottish Central Belt now completely closed for two weeks

Further measures expected to impact businesses in the north of England will be announced later today (12 October)
