ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Trump administration on Wednesday denied approving a controversial gold and copper mine near the spring water of the world’s largest bobcat salmon fishery in southwest Alaska.

The Army Corps of Engineers said in a statement that the permit application to build the Pebble Mine has been denied under both the Clean Water Act and the Rivers and Harbors Act.

The Corps also said the opening plan from the Pebble Limited Partnership, the mine’s backer, does not comply with the guidelines of the Clean Water Act.

The statement of Col. . Damon Delarosa, commander of the Alaska district of the corps, said the agency has concluded that the proposed project is against the public interest. ”
