World News – CA – UFC Vegas 12: Jack Marshman ring rust won’t be a factor in Sean Strickland’s fight

It’s been a long time since British fight fans saw Jack Marshman in action, 15 months to be precise The Welsh middleweight last graced the Octagon in July 2019 during the ‘UFC 239, ahead of much-vaunted Edmen Shahbazyan

Marshman’s hiatus, the result of withdrawing from a November 2019 showdown with Markus Perez and the coronavirus pandemic devastating this year’s UFC London card, will end tonight in Las Vegas

Former Cage Warriors 185lb defending champion will be welcomed back into action by American Sean Strickland, with whom he will face in the UFC Fight Night 181 preliminaries

Given its long period on the sidelines, cage rust was, naturally, a major talking point before Marshman’s return

I’m not worried about the ring rusting I’m confident I’ll get in there and do the same as I did two years ago

« Not really, » Marshman told Express Sport when asked if he thinks his break could potentially have a bad effect « The layoff obviously lasted a little longer [than I would have liked] I’m not really bothered [about it] »

Marshman’s relaxed demeanor stems in part from the fact that his last dance partner also suffered a long spell on the sidelines

« The guy I’m fighting was fired even longer, » said Marshman. « He’s been gone for over two years »

« I don’t think there will be any ring rust from me As soon as I get there, it will be exactly the same as usual »

As Marshman rightly points out, Strickland hasn’t competed since his October 2018 clash with Nordine Taleb – which he won via TKO in the second round

“I don’t think he will be affected,” Marshman said of Strickland’s dismissal “I saw him fight, he’s a good fighter It’s the same as me – I can have a few years off and I will always do exactly what I’m going to do

« I’m not worried about the rusting of the ring I’m convinced I’ll get in there and do the same thing I did two years ago, the same as him »

Should Marshman come out on the wrong end of the result tonight, he has no intention of attributing the loss to his break – a suit he hopes Strickland will follow

“If he loses, I don’t want him to use the excuse of ring rust and everything,” Marshman said of North Carolina “Because I’m not going use it I’m confident, that’s what it is and we’ll get there «

Preparing for someone who hasn’t competed for two years is a difficult task as he could have added new facets to his game in his spare time

« It doesn’t make any difference his last two fights because he hasn’t fought anyone who looks like me, » said the 30-year-old. « He fought a lot of guys so he could walk and stuff

« I don’t think he can do this to me He won’t bring me down »

If Strickland takes a high pressure approach, Marshman plans a short night at the office « If he rushes forward he’s going to walk on a heavy shot, » said the Welshman

He added: « If we get out of his old fights and he keeps moving forward I’ll knock him out early But I’m happy to do all three rounds »
