Hours before Saturday’s game against Baylor, there was a plane carrying a sign with « StandWithSamorg » flying behind, apparently supporting quarterback Sam Ehlinger’s decision to perform the song « Eyes of Texas » by School Earlier this season after the loss to Oklahoma, Ehlinger was one of the few players to defend the eyes, which led to immediate controversy
Longhorns coach Tom Herman said this week his team was dealing with reports of racial undertones in the song in his locker room
“I know there are lingering questions about our post-game,” said Herman “I mean very clearly that our coaches, not just in football, but in all sports and our administration are completely aligned We’ve been communicating all summer about the expectations of what the post-game should look like and we had very meaningful conversations with our team to encourage them to participate, but also being very, very sensitive to the situation, to the feelings, to the very individual circumstances experienced by all these young men «

Earlier this week, The Daily Texan, the campus student newspaper, reported that the Texan band would not perform the song next Saturday and go to the Longhorns’ home against Baylor University President Jay Hartzell, released a statement regarding the group’s decision on Wednesday night, which can be read below
« The Eyes of Texas will be played this weekend as it has been throughout the season – and it will continue to be played in future games and events. While we would like the group to be with our fans to all of our games, we never planned for them to perform live this Saturday We knew this summer that by making our campus a more welcoming place we would face a lot of difficult conversations.I remain truly optimistic as we will find ways to unite around our song, which has been so positive for so many Longhorns. over the past 120 years »
According to a Daily Texan report, an internal investigation revealed the band would not be playing the song in the game against Baylor Investigation revealed a lack of “necessary instrumentation” Longhorn Band director Scott Hanna, message to Daily Texan « Based on (survey responses) we don’t have the necessary instrumentation so we won’t be participating in Saturday’s game, » Hanna said
