The head of the World Health Organization said he was going into quarantine after someone he had been in contact with tested positive for Covid-19, but stressed he has no symptoms
“I have been identified as a contact of someone who has tested positive for # COVID19,” Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a tweet
« I’m fine and symptom-free, but I will go into quarantine in the next few days as per @WHO protocols and work from home, » he added.
Dr Tedros has been at the forefront of the United Nations health agency’s efforts to fight the pandemic
Covid-19 has claimed nearly 12 million lives and infected more than 46 million people worldwide since it emerged in China at the end of last year
Dr Tedros stressed on Twitter that « it is extremely important that we all comply with health advice »
« This is how we will break the chains of transmission of # COVID19, remove the virus and protect health systems »
Ethiopia’s 55-year-old former health and foreign minister has reiterated for months that everyone has a role to play in stopping the spread of the virus
I have been identified as a contact of someone who has tested positive for # COVID19 I am fine and without symptoms, but will go into quarantine in the next few days, per @WHO protocols, and work at home
WHO urges everyone to pay attention to hand washing, wearing masks and keeping a distance, while calling on authorities at different levels to work to find, isolate, test and treat cases, then trace and quarantine their contacts
Dr Tedros’ comments come as there is growing anger and exasperation over the novel coronavirus brakes as several European countries turn the pendulum back in the spring with new lockdowns and restrictions aimed at ending infections and galloping deaths
Geneva, where the WHO headquarters are based, yesterday declared a new state of emergency and said it would go beyond Swiss national measures and close all non-essential bars, restaurants and shops
Authorities in the region of around 500,000 people said the new measures were needed due to the surge in cases, with more than 1,000 positive daily tests in recent days, as well as the growing number of Covid patients -19 in hospitals and emergency care units in Geneva
