It has been an interesting week in the two main team sports. It was clear that the Scottish round-ball players performed well from the penalty spot and reached the European Championship Finals, while Argentina beat the All Blacks, both of which prove the miracles..

Now another miracle could happen this weekend, when Scotland play France in the second round of matches in the Autumn Nations Cup with the prize of a near-certain place in the tournament final at stake..

You can argue that Scotland has been hit hugely by the fact that the Covid-19 tests excluded Fiji from their opening match against France, as well as their match against Italy this weekend..

Organizers said they couldn’t blame Fiji for not being able to put together a competitive team, but they gave France an extra 28-0 win which means France tops Group Two by points difference. . An alternative outcome was available which was a 0-0 draw, and surely if there was nothing wrong with Fiji – and it’s hard to know how they could be held responsible – then a goalless draw was the right outcome to force it..

But then, France is France and Fiji is nothing but Fiji, intruding into what is essentially a replay of the Six Nations with some new value attached to the shape of Georgia and the men from the South Pacific..

The table is also very beneficial for France, but that is why I expect Scotland to be the team that will decide the final, perhaps against England..

On Saturday, Scotland were poor in the first half and wasted a lot of penalties while the squeak was creaking – at one point it was completely skewed – and the back row and our backs didn’t quite move. But I could see signs that Scotland was a few tweaks away from their run, a few words from Gregor Townsend in the first half and a slew of good substitutions made us lose the comfortable winners at the end with a well-worthy bonus try point.

Italy were hugely impressive in the first half, especially on the crash, and they should have advanced by more than four points in the first half.. They have found excellent new young players and will be a bigger force to reckon with in the future, but the Scottish defense almost held out and Italy failed to seize their chances..

In the bad old days, especially with world-class players in the form of Jimmy Ritchie and Rory Sutherland both injured, Scotland may not have rallied but this is a very professional team and slowly but surely they are starting to exert control, like I’ve been hoping it will happen, Stuart Hogg has shown just how advanced he is. In the role of captain. The Scots had some luck when an Italian hand gave Xander Fagerson his try – didn’t you like the look of surprise when the ball popped into his hands and he just remembered what to do – but for me, it was the defining moment.. The match was when Hogg decided to kick into a corner and the knockout ended with Scott Cummings crashing. It was a brave decision making and the result of trusting a well-dug package.

Against Wales, Scotland advanced and had to manage the game to win. They did so admirably and this amazing hitting resulted in George Turner attempting a bonus point.

Gregor Townsend will make changes against France, but not by much. I guess Rory Sutherland might not be back in time so he’s likely to be replaced by Ole Cable, isn’t it a nice luxury to have WP Nel in reserve? I’d like to see Blair Kinghorn and Dohan van der Merwe as wings.

We know that France will use its great men to try to strike Scotland in the offensive line and then bring their backs to eliminate us, but as was demonstrated earlier in the year, the Scots have the strength and talent in defense and attack, and the victory of the Six could be repeated..

Then we’ll just have to defeat Fiji and if they can’t come, Scotland will have a 28-0 victory, although I prefer to play with them and win all the group matches.. And if England beat Ireland and Wales, we’d probably go to Twickenham for the Fall Nations Cup Final.. .

The only thing Scotland has not done since 1999 is to win a major tournament, but if Scotland’s men’s soccer team can end the 22-year nightmare and qualify for the Euro 2020 Finals (1), then surely the time has come for the men of rugby.. To simulate it and make it at least in the final.
