WOOD reported that the cargo ship, launched in 1958, cost $ 8 million to build and TV station reported that it was the largest ship in the Great Lakes region until 1971

Reverend Jeffrey M. Hubbard, dean of Mariners Church in Detroit, said the wreckage was still alive for many people

“It’s stuck in people’s memories in Michigan, and the Great Lakes are so closely linked to our region,” Hubbard told Free Press: “Hearing the story of brave men who lost their lives resonates with people”

The newspaper reports that two events have been planned at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum in Detroit to remember the ship and its crew. A vigil was planned at the site of announcer Edmund Fitzgerald, followed by a guard of honor accompanying a memorial wreath of the Detroit River
