Unfortunately for the Hawks, there ranked runner was not in action as sophomore Greenlee Smock missed the meet and her team finished fifth in the final standings.

Senior Caitlin Alberts did finish in the top 10 with an eighth-place finish, and sophomore James Gruver was 11th in the boys’ 5K race.

The only other two runners in the top 20 were sophomore Zach Morningstar and senior Megan Van Zante.

In the girls’ 5K race, Class 1A No. 2 Pekin finished first with 28 points. Montezuma, a « team to watch » in 1A, was next with 66 points and 1A No. 15 Collins-Maxwell finished third with 90.

The rest of the field was Twin Cedars (101), Lynnville-Sully (128), Wayne (168), Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (174) and English Valleys (198).

Six of the top seven finishers in the race came into the day ranked. Twin Cedars sophomore and 1A No. 8 Rylee Dunkin won the race in 21 minutes, 12 seconds followed by 1A No. 22 Lily Fariss of Pekin in 21:17.

Alberts’ time in eighth was 22:15, which 15 seconds slower than 1A No. 29 Lauren Derscheid of Pekin.

Van Zante finished 20th in 24:08 followed by sophomore Kinsley Tice (25:58) in 41st, freshman Brooke Conover (27:58) in 48th and junior Callista Hackert (30:00) in 51st.

Class 1A No. 6 Pekin won the boys’ team race with 46 points. Pella Christian was next with 72 followed by North Mahaska (102), Montezuma (134), Lynnville-Sully (135), Collins-Maxwell (136), Wayne (158), EBF (165), Southeast Warren (217) and Moravia (263).

Gruver finished 11th with a time of 18:52 and Morningstar took 18th in 19:34. The rest of the boys’ lineup included sophomore Gentry Walston (20:53) in 32nd, senior Mason Jansen (20:57) in 34th, freshman Luke Farrell in 60th and sophomore Evan Fikse in 78th.

Class 1A No. 3 Randy Jimenez of Southeast Warren won the race in 16:00. Fourth-ranked Brady Milikin was second in 17:03.
