Racing Point technical director Andrew Green says the team were « surprised » when Sergio Perez complained about the way he was being treated since his departure was confirmed

During the preparation for the Russian Grand Prix on Thursday, Perez said he felt that « some people in the team tend to hide things » and added that « we just need to be so transparent as possible to ensure that we achieve our goals «

After posting his quotes online, Perez spoke to the leadership of the Racing Point team, which led him to post a clarification on social media, noting that « the air is totally clear «

Green pointed out that any withholding of information was only for the 2021 schedule, which is standard practice in any team where a driver does not stay

“These conversations are basically about next year’s car,” said Green “We’re not ruling it out from everything we do this year. It’s in our best interests to have it as soon as possible for the rest of the season We fight for the championship

« There’s no point in starting to treat him any differently and we haven’t. And that’s why we were surprised that instead of telling us about his problems, the first one we read about it be in the press So it was a bit strange

« But when we told him about this yesterday and asked him what he thought we were taking away, he realized that in fact he was wrong and that we weren’t holding anything back And we were open until a few hours before the announcement

« But one thing we won’t discuss is what we’re doing for next year’s car. But that shouldn’t stop us from doing the work we’re doing now for this year »

Both Racing Point riders used a revised suspension package on Friday as the team continues to update the RP20

“Here’s an update to the rear suspension, and a pretty big update,” Green said “And a little front suspension too, but mostly rear And that’s what the riders were trying to tune this morning, and it seemed to be giving good results So we’re happy with how it’s gone so far «

Perez finished the FP2 session in sixth place, while his teammate Lance Stroll finished 17th

« We have some balance issues on the different specs of tires that worked » said Green « The track is quite difficult as far as the tarmac goes, but I think Sergio was much more comfortable with the car at the beginning

« I think Lance wasn’t that uncomfortable with the car, he was just more uncomfortable with the way he was driving

« And every time we asked him about the car he said, ‘The car is fine, I can’t take a lap I just need more time to think about it.’ had some overdrive going

« I think Sergio was a little more relaxed and gradually developed I think Lance left a little too fast But neither of them were reporting big problems »
