A government sponsored website allowing parents to compare IVF providers has been launched, listing every single clinic in Queensland that offers this service.
The new tool – Your IVF Success – met with mixed reactions, however, as an expert group warns that clinics will be less excited about treating couples with reduced chances of success.
However, the Australian and New Zealand Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Societies have warned that the new website would create « confusion, misinformation and potentially restricted access to treatment ».
Meanwhile, the Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand, whose logo appears on the website, said in a statement that it « cautiously welcomes » the start of your IVF success and hoped it would lead couples to make more informed decisions.
« It is important to note, however, that comparisons between units should be treated with a degree of caution, as units treat different patient populations in many circumstances, » said FSANZ President Professor Luk Rombauts.
« For example, in some units there may be a higher proportion of older women looking for IVF whose chances of success are limited, or women who previously did not get pregnant after IVF and are now seeking a second opinion, » said Prof. Rombauts.
Courier-Mail looked at the data in depth and recorded every clinic in Queensland based on the birth metric for each individual treatment attempt.
For example, it shows that in women under the age of 35, 39.5 percent of individual treatment attempts at coastal IVF on the Sunshine Coast resulted in a birth, the highest in the state.
According to the same metric, Care Fertility in Toowoomba performed worst with a success rate of only 15.2 percent.
However, these metrics can be biased as some practices may accept patients who are initially more likely to become pregnant.
