But Hargreaves’ playing record made Ferguson doubt the move would be a success before he arrived at Old Trafford – an idea that, in hindsight, turned out to be just on the money.

In his autobiography, Ferguson explained, “I think less fondly of our move to Owen Hargreaves, who was phenomenal in the summer of 2006 and was just the type of player we needed to fill the void left by Keane.
