BARCLAYS customers were excluded from online banking and their payments were delayed after a problem with the website
The bank confirmed the problems after hundreds of people said they could not log into accounts online today
Data from Down Detector – which tracks outages on major services – indicates that the problems started around 944h
At the height of the problem, nearly 600 customers encountered problems in cities like London, Cardiff and Birmingham, and as of 4 p.m. Barclays says the problems are still ongoing
The bank did not want to tell us how many customers are affected by saying only that it is a « small number », but given that it has millions of users, it could mean that thousands are affected
Barclays adds that affected customers who have made a payment using the app or online banking must wait four hours before trying to make the same payment again
Do not return any payment in the meantime if you have received an error message because payment may still be processed
Customers can also use the app, contact Barclays through its automated telephone banking services, or speak to the bank by phone
Customers took to Twitter to express their frustration, writing: « @Barclays your online banking is down on payday What the hell is going on? »
Another said: « @Barclays tried unsuccessfully to access online banking all morning Need to process some urgent payments What’s going on? »

If you are not satisfied with the way the bank handled your problem, you can contact the Free Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS)
David complained to the bank for trying to access her money online « all morning », while Gem said the problem meant she « couldn’t pay the staff »
A spokesperson for Barclays said: « A small number of our customers are having problems logging into their online banking. We apologize for this and are working to resolve it as soon as possible »
Barclays has a service verification page on their website so you can see if there is a problem

If you want to make a complaint, you can do so through online chat, phone, letter or email web form
If you are unlucky with Barclays or if you do not get a response within eight weeks, you can file your complaint with the free financial mediation service.
