Last season’s beaten finalists Villa take on the Brewers in the second round of the Carabao Cup

Aston Villa kick off their 2020-21 season with a Carabao Cup second round tie against Burton Albion.

Dean Smith’s men are yet to start their Premier League campaign as their opening fixture against Manchester City was rearranged due to their opponents being afforded extra time to recover following to the late conclusion to their 2019-20 campaign because of their involvement in the Champions League.

That means their first competitive match of the new season will be against League One side Burton.

The Brewers saw off Accrington in their opening round tie, winning 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Jake Buxton’s side lost their opening League One fixture at the weekend, going down 2-1 at Fleetwood Town.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, games are still being played behind closed doors – though fans are being given the chance to watch as many matches as possible.

Yes. The tie is being shown live on Sky Sports – on the Main Event and Football channels.

Smith has a fully-fit squad meaning goalkeeper Tom Heaton and striker Wesley, who missed the end of last season through injury, could feature.

O’Toole must serve a ban after his sending off in the final minute of Saturday’s defeat at Fleetwood in Sky Bet League One.

New signing Charles Vernam is still sidelined with the knee injury sustained against Accrington in round one.

Villa boss Dean Smith: “We are looking forward to it. It will be a little bit (strange) but some pre-season games have got us ready for it.

“It is an important game. It is our first game, so we want to make sure we get a really positive start and a good performance to take into the Sheffield United game.

“We got to the final last season and got beaten narrowly by Manchester City. It is something Aston Villa have got a great tradition in and we will be all out to try to continue that tradition.”

“It is a big challenge. They have done well to get through the first round and they’ve played a few more competitive games than we have.

“Jake Buxton has gone in there and will have ambitions of getting his first cup upset. Hopefully we can put in a really professional performance and stop that.”

Burton boss Jake Buxton: “Villa have progressed since we last played them gaining promotion from the Championship and then retaining their Premier League status.

“You are never sure how they will come out of the blocks, but they have signed a couple of new players and we expect them to be full off beans and right at it. Matty Cash coming in from Forest we expect to be sharp, and Ollie Watkins coming in from Brentford we know can be a big threat. There is talent throughout their squad and we expect them to start quickly and we need to nullify them and play our game.

“We fully expect Villa to put a strong side out and we are preparing for their strongest 11. If it changes and they don’t, I will be encouraging our lads not to take them lightly and importantly to still play our brand of football, make a good game of it and take it to Villa as well.
