The number of men dying from cancer in private homes during the coronavirus pandemic is around 50% higher than the five-year average, new figures show

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released startling figures which appear to show the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on other health services in England

Deaths from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in private homes in England increased by 79% during the pandemic compared to the five-year average

Figures show leading cause of death in private homes during Covid-19 was ischemic heart disease

The ONS has confirmed that the excessive deaths in private homes – the above average number of deaths for the corresponding period over the previous five years – were mostly deaths not involving Covid-19

Of the 25,472 excess deaths in private homes in England recorded up to September 11, 2,358 (9%) were deaths involving Covid-19, while 23,114 (91%) were excess deaths non-Covid

In Wales, of the 1,624 excess deaths in private homes during the same period, 134 (8%) were deaths involving Covid-19, while 1,490 (92%) were deaths in excess non-Covid

Deaths in private homes in England among men from heart disease since the start of the coronavirus pandemic are 26% higher than the five-year average

Prostate cancer deaths increased 53% while bowel cancer deaths increased 46%

For women in England, deaths in private homes from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease increased by 75%, while deaths from breast cancer increased by 47%

In Wales, male deaths from heart disease have increased 23% from the five-year average, deaths from prostate cancer have increased by 75% and 52% bowel cancer death

In Wales, the number of female deaths in private homes from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is almost double the five-year average (up 92%), while deaths due to breast cancer are up 28%

Sarah Caul, head of mortality analysis at ONS, said: « As deaths in hospitals and nursing homes have fallen below the five-year average since the initial peak of the pandemic of coronavirus, we have regularly seen deaths in private homes remain well above the five-year average

« We have seen an overall increase in deaths as well as a redistribution of the various causes of death

« For example, while deaths from heart disease are below average in hospital, they have been above average at home

« It’s a similar picture when you look at prostate cancer in men and dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in women

« Unlike the high number of deaths involving Covid-19 in hospitals and nursing homes, the majority of deaths in private homes are unrelated to Covid-19 »
