Derby County lost 2-1 to crash out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Preston North End.

The Rams took the lead early in the second half through Jason Knight, but four minutes later found themselves reduced to 10 men when Mike te Wierik was sent off.

North End equalised when substitute Tom Barkhuizen smashed a shot high past Kelle Roos before the visitors snatched a winner in added time.

A harsh handball was given against Lee Buchanan and another of Preston’s substitutes, Daniel Johnson, converted the penalty to set up a third-round tie against either Brighton or Portsmouth.

Derby County boss Phillip Cocu was angry with the decision to award Preston North End a late winning penalty in the Carabao Cup tie at Pride Park Stadium.

Jason Knight had put Derby ahead in the second-round tie, but Mike te Wierik’s red card left the Rams to play with 10 men from the 55th minute.

Substitute Tom Barkhuizen equalised for North End before referee Andy Davies awarded a penalty to the visitors in added time for handball against Lee Buchanan.

« There was no handball – it hit him in the face, that is why he (Buchanan) was so angry, » said Cocu.

The 22-year-old Lech Poznan winger is in Derby and set to boost the Rams’ attacking options.

Rams manager Phillip Cocu was asked for the latest on Jozwiak after last night’s 2-1 defeat by Preston North End in the Carabao Cup.

Cocu did not mention the player by name, but said: « I only can say at this time I hope and expect, and within 24 hours we can announce something.

« It is looking promising – and still we work on one more position, the striker position to strengthen the team. »

Lech Poznan’s Polish international winger Kamil Jozwiak is set to sign and he could be joined by former Liverpool and Bournemouth attacker Jordon Ibe, DerbyshireLive understands.

And that is unlikely to be the end of their business as the Rams are also in the market for a striker.

Ibe is a player Derby asked about last summer while he was at Bournemouth, but his club was unwilling to let him out on loan.

The 24-year-old is currently without a club and is a free agent after he left Bournemouth at the end of last season.
