Police officer shot dead by man detained at Croydon Custody Center in south London 23-year-old man who was in custody is in critical condition with gunshot wounds

A policeman was shot dead at a south London police station in a shocking incident in the wee hours of the morning

Colleagues and paramedics treated the officer at the scene after the 215h filming at Croydon Detention Center

He was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service where he tragically died of his injuries

Tributes are pouring in this morning, including those from the Prime Minister who said: « We owe a huge debt to those who risk their own lives to ensure our safety »

Leroy Logan, a former Met superintendent, said there were questions that needed to be answered regarding the circumstances that led to the shooting

« How did this person get to the station, whether it was in the yard or in the building itself, and whether they were able to produce a weapon, whether it was on them at the time » , he told BBC News

« It depends on the caliber of the weapon, because obviously if it is a small weapon and it can be easily in that person’s clothes, that obviously brings up another question about the degree search of that person, if at all

« These are the things that the professional standards department will be looking at and the IOPC Fund and investigators will need to look into this issue in depth »

« Police officers on leave, wiping tears from their eyes, laid flowers in front of the station this morning

Police family today mourned the « devastating » loss of a gunned down officer

John Apter, National President of the Police Federation of England and Wales, who represents the base officers, said: “It is utterly devastating and heartbreaking news that a colleague from the metropolitan police was shot

« Police are family and when we lose one of our own in such a devastating way, it affects us all

« The dangers police officers face every day are very real and unfortunately, as we have seen, police officers can make the ultimate sacrifice

An honor roll at the National Police Memorial in London lists all officers who have been killed by criminal acts in the line of duty since 1680

The table lists more than 1,600 officers who died while performing vital tasks such as foiling terrorists, suppressing rioters and organizing protests

Among them was Pc Andrew Harper, who died after being caught in a tow rope and dragged along country lanes after trying to stop ATV thieves in Berkshire in August 2019

His three teenage killers were cleared of the murder but found guilty of manslaughter after a trial at Old Bailey
