World News – GB – Eddie Nketiah outshines Alan Shearer to make England U21 history

The U21s of England resumed their qualification campaign for the European Championships a short time ago, during a meeting with Turkey in Molineux

Aidy Boothroyd’s men sat comfortably atop the Group C table before kick-off, having accumulated 19 points in 7 outings

Nonetheless, the hosts got into the proceedings looking for a rebound performance, after being held to a 3-3 draw by the Andorra minnows last week

And, although their performance once again leaves something to be desired, bouncing back, in the end, was exactly what England managed

The Young Lions took the lead in the clash with just over a quarter of an hour on the clock, when Huseyin Turkmen crossed his own net

Aaron Ramsdale, meanwhile, kept the home side’s advantage intact shortly after the interval, descending low to his left to prevent a penalty from Turkey:

England’s victory was then almost assured with two minutes left, when Eddie Nketiah, after being slipped by the impressive Ryan Sessegnon, found himself at the near post in a typically cool manner

The visitors managed to pull one off in added time, but in the end it was only a consolation

As well as proving a key result in mathematically securing the country’s place at the European Championships, England’s victory over Turkey tonight was also significant for one player in particular.

High-profile hitman Nketiah’s strike tonight was his 14th for England Under-21 (in just 12 appearances)

This is the most goals a player has ever managed to score for the Young Lions, breaking a bond with Alan Shearer and Francis Jeffers and in doing so, etching Nketiah’s name in the books of English international football history:

14 – Eddie Nketiah 13 – Alan Shearer, Francis Jeffers 11 – Saido Berahino 10 – Nathan Redmond 9 – Darren Bent, Frank Lampard
