After the match, Trotter’s manager Ian Evatt spoke to the press and here are some of his initial opinions on the win.
“I am always happy and happy with your victory. I guess we had to roll up our sleeves and dig at times. We had to sacrifice a little bit of possession in the second half and we don’t necessarily like doing it but they didn’t create a lot of fun so our space between the lines was really good..
“We have adapted well and thought the three defenders and the goalkeeper were great and we knew they were taking risks because when they try to build attacks and be tough and the full back are going up, we knew when the move was open and the first goal was excellent.
“We won the ball at the top of the field, Sarsi plays forward with Doyle in space and Doyle does what Doyle does and ends the chance. And throughout the match other than the one Matt saved with his legs in the second half, we created better chances. Despite all their possession, they didn’t hurt us much, and it was fun.
“I must say that the three defenders have defended really well. Rico plays from his skin right now. The way he plays and leads the team is excellent and those in front of him, Sarsi, Andrew Tut, Doyle and Nathan have put in a really good move..
“Ghaithin went out for six weeks, training and it took 90 minutes. They deserve it and suddenly, the team looks more complete, and everyone is back in shape. It’s competitive and we’ve left five or six players out of the entire squad tonight but that’s what we need and that’s what we want.
“We need to keep people in one piece so it’s hard to join the Bolton Wanderers.
“We are a big club and suddenly, it is difficult to join our team and when you are in it you have to make sure you stay in it because there are people waiting now in the wings that take your place.
You had a big call with the goalkeeper – are you happy with Matt Gilkes’s performance and what is the thinking behind it?
“I know Matt has been around for a very long time and have the utmost confidence in him. He hasn’t played a competitive match in a year but the way he trains and the way he coaches, they all participated and it’s 110% every day..
I knew that he would not let anyone down. Today he came with his voice more than anything else who led the team, organized people, and put people in their places.
« When called, he did what he had to do. It will probably be sore in the morning but we’ll take that all day to get a clean sheet.
“For all the mind games that you said at the press conference on Thursday, we learned that Eoin and Gethin are not 100%, but we made that call, they got through the game as best they could.
“For Gethin to play 90 minutes are incredible fitness levels from where he was and Eoin was tired but he put a real shift in the team and when he was called up he got his chance and seized it.
