Gareth Southgate allayed fears about Harry Kane’s fitness after England captain sustained a muscle injury in training ahead of Sunday’s clash with Belgium
The Tottenham forward was only named to the bench for the UEFA Nations League clash against the number one ranked team in the world, after suffering a small issue in preparation for the match
It was initially suggested that Kane would miss Sunday’s game altogether and was in doubt for Wednesday’s clash against Denmark as well
However, Southgate says injury fears have been overestimated and Kane has only suffered cramps during the week and could leave the bench against Belgium, although England are keen to be careful with their skipper
Asked for an update on Kane, Southgate explained, « He started training on Wednesday and had what he felt was a bit of a cramp so he was basically muscle fatigue.
Man Utd and Liverpool plot to abandon League Cup and reduce Premier League to 18 teams
« He seems more confident in how he feels, but he hasn’t had a lot of training time on the pitch this week »
Tottenham have reportedly requested that Kane be released from his international duties so he can be watched by the club, although he remains in the running to play – and even start – against Denmark in midweek
With Kane missing, Southgate opted for Everton-form striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin to lead the line past Danny Ings, the Toffees’ frontman who scored on his debut against Wales
Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford will be tasked with supporting him, with Southgate opting otherwise for a defensive formation consisting of three right-backs – with Kieran Trippier set to play left-winger again
