Lewis Hamilton has paid full tribute to the « phenomenal » Michael Schumacher after equaling his long-standing F1 winning record and receiving an old protective helmet from the legendary German’s son, Mick
Hamilton claimed a 91st Eifel GP victory to match Schumacher’s all-time benchmark, 14 years after the seven-time champion claimed the last victory of his own glittering career to set a record that few people thought they were equaled
The Mercedes driver was surprised after the race with a presentation from Mick, Michael’s son who himself seems ready for a seat on the F1 grid next year; Hamilton was given an old helmet the German wore in his last F1 season in 2012, while also driving for Mercedes

Hamilton replaced Schumacher at Mercedes for 2013 and over the past few seasons he has raced towards the seven-time champion’s winning streak at an unprecedented knot rate
Highlighting the breadth of the mark Schumacher left in the sport, he recorded only one victory less than the next two drivers on the all-time list – Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna – combined at the time of his retirement
Quadruple champion Sebastian Vettel is now third in the table, but just over half of Hamilton and Schumacher’s total
Hamilton was a teenager when the F1 legend surpassed Prost’s previous benchmark of 51 wins in 2001 and, recalling his memories of watching the former Ferrari driver at the height of his F1 dominance, told Sky F1 Sports: « I just remember sitting on the couch with my brother and my dad watching the Grands Prix every Sunday and watching Michael take to the storm
