Dons boss Derek McInnes says they need to limit supplies to Lawrence Shankland to increase their chances of winning today’s new company derby

Aberdeen travel to Tannadice this afternoon to face the Tangerines on league affairs for the first time since March 2016

United are back in the Premiership this season with former Reds forward Shankland as the main threat

The 25-year-old was with Aberdeen from 2013 to 2017, but failed to score in 17 appearances

Shankland joined Ayr United after leaving Pittodria and two prolific seasons at Somerset Park led to a move to Dundee United

The player, who first became a father earlier this week, helped return the Arabs to the league title last season and has scored twice this quarter in an injured start to the campaign

« He has just become the father of a young girl (Thursday) I am still in contact with him and I know his family well

« I think that with the maturity he has shown in recent seasons has been excellent

« He’s a fantastic finisher and that’s why we took him from Queen’s Park

« We must try to limit this service in him and minimize his influence »

Today’s clash with United is the first of three Premiership appearances for Aberdeen ahead of the Scottish Cup semi-final with Celtic on November 1

McInnes is keen to build momentum after the international break and hopes to start this process on Tayside

United were beaten by Peterhead last weekend in the Coupe de la Ligue, but McInnes won’t take them lightly

He added: « Now we are only focusing on Aberdeen’s business as we have three very important league games before the semi-final

« We have seen that in the past, with the matches of the Coupe de la Ligue, they can give surprising results

« Dundee United have been very stable on the way home after being promoted They have had good results and others will be disappointed

« They have shown enough that they can do well and compete in the Premiership, so we have to beware of that

« I know Micky (Mellon) signed a few signings to try and strengthen the squad, but I think it will be a tough game for us and we can’t wait to take on the challenge »

Lewis Ferguson is available for Donations, having returned from Scotland’s Under-21 team early for a thigh treatment
