The Virgin Money London Marathon kicks off today, but it’s safe to say that it will be a bit different from previous years

Most participants will take part in the race virtually, while the physical race will only be completed by a selection of elite athletes, who will complete 19 laps from St James ’Park to London

The other 45,000 participants will run the 26Distance of 3 km on the route of their choice, wherever they are

When will the elite race kick off, who’s competing and how can you follow the action at home?

Due to the small circuit, races must be staggered at each kick-off when the previous one is over

And yes – you read that correctly, each of the races will be finished in three hours

Elite competitors will do 196 laps of 2 clockwise 15 km course around St James Park

Athletes will start at the top of the mall before heading down Horse Guard’s Road, before turning into the Birdcage Walk

From there they will continue on Spur Road opposite Buckingham Palace and end up on The Mall

No – spectators cannot watch this year’s race as the course will be cordoned off to secure the so-called « biosecurity bubble »

Quadruple winner and world record holder Eliud Kipchoge will participate, along with Mosinet Geremew, which is widely regarded as his biggest competition – after Kenenisa Bekele withdrew from the race on Friday due to a calf injury

BBC One and BBC Two will broadcast different segments of the race throughout the day

If you want to virtually follow the 45,000 other participating runners, you can do so by downloading the official Virgin Money London Marathon app

As you might expect, road closures are pretty minimal this year, as much of the race takes place behind closed doors

Roads will be closed to traffic in St James’s Park from 6 a.m. on Friday October 2 to 6 a.m. on Monday October 5
