In scuffed handwriting, she wrote how he first beat her in 1978 and punched and kicked her in their hotel room for hours as she tried to escape
Over the next 16 years, the abuse consisted of slipping into jealous rage and crashing her car, throwing it against walls and leaving it blackened and bruised multiple times.

They were not admitted into evidence in Simpson’s trial because the judge ruled it was hearsay and they have been largely ignored since.
During Simpson’s trial, the prosecution used his history of domestic violence to undermine his clear image he cultivated as a football player and actor who starred in films like The Naked Gun
But it didn’t work and the jury found him not guilty, a verdict Nicole’s family see as a terrible miscarriage of justice
The first diary entry is from 1978 and shows that Nicole already realized that her fairytale boyfriend and future husband had a dark side
They had met in Los Angeles where she moved to pursue a career in photography and had an « instant » connection, Tanya tells the film
It reads: « The first time he beat me after Louis Nanie Mary’s birthday party Started around the corner of 5th ave in New York at around 9 p.m. (pm)

Nicole didn’t tell her family anything was wrong and it wasn’t until she filed for divorce from Simpson that they had any clue
Tanya says in the documentary that she was « angry » with Nicole after her death to say nothing, but that she was under Simpson’s spell
An entry from 1988 describes how a gay man kissed his son and it caused Simpson to turn away
Nicole wrote: « OJ threw me against the walls of our hotel and on the floor Put bruises on my arms and back The window marked me – he thought he would kick me out
In the documentary, former LAPD officer John Edwards says he visited Simpson’s house the following year and found Nicole severely beaten after calling 911
He said, « A woman ran out, tall blonde, and she was screaming ‘he’s going to kill me’ I said who? She said, » OJ « I said » OJ Simpson? « She said: « You have been here eight times and haven’t done anything about it »
During his testimony at Simpson’s trial, Edwards said Nicole « collapsed on top of me » and was « wet and shaking, she was cold and she was beaten »
Nicole had a one-inch cut on her upper left lip, a swollen right forehead and her right eye was starting to darken
Edwards told the jury: « I could see on her face that she had a mark like a hiking shoe, she looked like she had been kicked in the head
« I look over my head and here is OJ Simpson comes right up to where the door is and he’s screaming, I mean yelling, » I don’t want you here anymore I have two wives, I don’t want more of you here »

Nicole and Ron Goldman were found dead at her home in Brentwood on June 12, 1994
Nicole had been out to a restaurant that evening and according to her family, it was one of the first times that Simpson was not welcome at one of their meetings
Nicole’s mother had left her glasses at the restaurant and she called Goldman, who worked there, and he offered to drop them off at her house
Prosecutors alleged that when Simpson showed up to kill Nicole Goldman was there and he killed her too
Tanya Brown bursts into tears again when she reads an entry in Nicole’s diary she wrote a month before she was killed
He was like, « We officially broke up I told OJ we would go back every other weekend I need the rest OJ is so gone – he needs the time alone with them until what he’s leaving He’s been gone the last 4 weekends – so I asked if we could start with him this weekend ”
After Simpson’s acquittal, Goldman’s family made it their mission to prove his guilt and brought a civil action against him, which they won
A jury awarded them $ 33.5 million in damages but they received nothing from Simpson and in the meantime the judgment rose to $ 70 million
In 2008, Simpson was jailed for 33 years for an armed robbery at a Las Vegas hotel involving his own memories and was released in early 2017 after serving nearly nine years
