World News – GB – Provinces learn pool fate in revamped Champions Cup

Leinster, Munster, Ulster and Connacht all learned about their pool rivals in the revamped and enlarged Heineken Champions Cup after the draw in Lausanne on Wednesday afternoon

Leinster – who was beaten by Saracens in the quarter-finals in last season’s competition – will face Montpellier and Northampton Saints in Pool A, while in Pool B Connacht can expect a clash with their former coach Pat Lam when Bristol Bears come to the sports ground The West also faces Racing 92, beaten in the final by Exeter Chiefs earlier this month

Still in Pool B, Munster will face Clermont and the Harlequins, while Ulster was opposed to Gloucester and Toulouse

The tournament has been extended to 24 teams for the 20/21 edition to compensate for the huge disruption caused to the European national calendar after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic

Eight Pro14, France Top 14 and England Premiership teams have been split into four levels over two pools, with each team playing four group matches, compared to six in the normal season

The top four from each of the 12-team groups advance to the round of 16, with clubs ranked fifth through eighth in each group placing in the bottom 16 of the Challenge Cup

The revamped format includes the home and away quarter-finals, with the cumulative score from the two games determining the winner

Last season’s competition consisted of 20 teams, with Pro14 providing seven of that number

The matches will be played during the months of December and January and the details of the matches will be announced later
