After the death of Freddie Mercury in 1991, Queen recorded her last studio album in 1995, Made in Heaven The record saw Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon perform alongside Freddie’s recorded vocals And one of the tracks was a rock version of singer Queen’s solo song I Was Born To Love You in 1985.
The song made its live debut in 2005 with a performance by Queen and Paul Rodgers
While working on the Made In Heaven track, Brian May said, “I was obsessed with the song and got the idea to make a new version of it, simulating how it would have sounded if we had been able to play it live with Freddie on stage
« The Queen version was therefore designed as a ‘virtual’ live track, using Freddie’s spectacular voice as a common thread »
The 73-year-old continued, “Roger, John and I performed our roles live, on a rearranged model I had assembled – with a few additions to the arrangement, taking some liberties with the vocals, and even borrowing ad-libs from Freddie, to add to the feeling that it was a live band recording
« We didn’t know that years later we would have the opportunity with Adam to finally bring this arrangement to life on a real stage »
Now a 2014 live recording of I Was Born To Love You, performed by Queen and Adam Lambert is featured on the band’s live album
Released as a single today, the track was recorded and filmed at Marine Stadium in Tokyo for Super Sonic, Tokyo on August 17 of this year
About the concert and the live track, May recalled: « We all thought it was a pretty difficult concert
“The crowd was wonderful, but with the extreme heat and humidity it was very difficult to play
« However, when we saw the video we all thought she had a lot of energy and the interaction with the crowd was great »
