The former Manchester United defender got stuck for Martial following Scholes’ recent criticism of the player
Rio Ferdinand defended Anthony Martial after Paul Scholes recently questioned whether he was good enough to lead the line with Manchester United
Martial has had his most prolific season so far for the Red Devils in the 2019-2020 campaign, scoring 17 times in the Premier League
He has yet to find the net in all competitions so far this season, and earlier this month Scholes suggested in an interview with Stadium Astro that he is not a natural striker.
« The problem with United’s forwards is that none of them are a true center-forward, » Scholes said before completing the signing of Edinson Cavani
« Martial almost made us believe he was one at the end of last season because he had scored so many goals and was pretty good
Despite struggling in front of goal, Martial was included in United’s starting lineup for their Champions League game against PSG on Tuesday
And speaking on BT Sport ahead of the game, Ferdinand said he believes Scholes has been unfair to the Frenchman
« I think it was very hard on Scholesy’s part, I have to be honest with you, » Ferdinand said
« He had played inconsistently up front for Manchester United He was played wide on the left, sometimes in front
« He had a good streak up there and proved his worth as a young Non9 at Manchester United »
It remains to be seen if Martial can open his account for this season at Parc des Princes, but if he doesn’t he could well be sacked for Cavani this weekend when United face Chelsea in the Premier League
