South Yorkshire has become the last part of England to move to the highest level of coronavirus restrictions following an increase in Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations in the region

Sheffield Mayor Dan Jarvis warned on Wednesday morning that « inaction was not an option » by announcing the move to level 3 measures from Saturday and calling on locals to follow the news restrictions to prevent further deaths

Police and the South Yorkshire Crime Commissioner have called on the government to explain to the public how the level 3 restrictions for the region are part of a ‘longer term strategy’ to beat the coronavirus

Dr Alan Billings warned the public would be less willing to follow the rules if they felt the restrictions were ‘responsive’, as he urged people to support the new measures

« If the level 3 upgrade is needed to stop the relentless spread of the coronavirus, then the police will have a role in enforcing the new restrictions, for our sake, » Dr Billings said

« Having spoken to the chief of police and senior officers, I have no doubt that they will continue to do so in a proportionate manner, but we should not doubt that there will be law enforcement activities. law if people willfully flout the law

« Of course the police can’t be everywhere all the time so it is essential that we all play our part »

He added: « Likewise, the government must understand that people will continue to obey the rules as long as they feel that what is being proposed is not only reactive, but part of a strategy. longer term to defeat the virus

Gyms will be allowed to reopen in the Liverpool City area under Level 3 restrictions following discussions with the government, said local metro mayor Steve Rotheram

“Collectively, we have systematically called for the scientific evidence to support the imposition of the package of measures under Level 3 and we have highlighted the inconsistency of approach following the announcement that Lancashire would have in fact not exactly the same set of restrictions as a region of our city, ”said Mr. Rotheram at BBC Radio Merseyside

« Talks continued until late last night and the government approved the case that I presented on behalf of the leaders of the urban region and that they would now align us with other level 3 areas

With 14 million people in South Yorkshire joining the area of Liverpool City, Greater Manchester and Lancashire at Level 3, there will soon be 73 million people (13% of England’s population) living under the toughest coronavirus restrictions

“Following extensive discussions with ministers, local council leaders and I have agreed with the government that South Yorkshire will be upgraded to level 3, the ‘very high’ alert level for restrictions on coronavirus

« The restrictions will take effect from 12:01 am on Saturday 24 October and will cover all four areas of local government – Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield

« We all recognize the gravity of the situation and have taken the responsible path to make sure we save lives and livelihoods, and protect our NHS More older people are contracting the virus

« The number of people with Covid in our hospitals has doubled in the last ten days, with no sign that this will decrease over the next few weeks Inaction was not an option

« We have called on the government to provide a local lifeline for our local authorities and our economy, and the new restrictions will be introduced alongside resources, meaning we are better equipped to control the virus and limit some of the damage to jobs and businesses

« Although infection rates vary in South Yorkshire, collective action was the only practical choice to keep everyone in our area safe

« If the restrictions are effective, individual local authorities can move to lower alert levels as soon as it can be done safely, in consultation with other local leaders, myself and the national government

« However, in order to reach this point as quickly as possible, it is essential that the people of South Yorkshires follow the new restrictions as soon as they are in place I would like to thank all the inhabitants of the region for their perseverance

« The character and courage of the people of South Yorkshires will be needed in abundance to help us through what will be an extremely difficult time

« Our NHS staff have worked tirelessly throughout this pandemic to protect us all We owe it to them to take the pressure off before the most difficult winter our health service will ever face I know people will step up and do their part «
