THIS week’s test results for Covid-19 at all 11 Betfred Super League clubs, match officials and other affected staff have been received

Two players and two non-playing staff have tested positive for coronavirus, but neither have been named by the governing body – and neither have their clubs

Since then, Wakefield coach Chris Chester has said his club are considering blocking after two other players tested positive for Covid-19

Chester revealed at his press conference today that seven other players were forced to withdraw and said the reopening of schools may have been a contributing factor

« There were a few positive tests and seven or eight other players that we had to give up on top of that, » he said.

« We need to look at what we’re doing on the pitch, if we’re doing everything we can to minimize the risk, and all players also need to look at what we’re doing away from the club.

“We talked today about the possibility of locking ourselves in for four or five days to get rid of the virus that is lingering around the players at the moment

« It would give us the chance to take a look at the training aspect and clean that up deep. If that’s what it takes, this is what we’re going to have to do and cross our fingers that works. » for us »

Chester added: “It was always the worry as soon as the schools got in the risk gets a lot higher and without really delving into it that’s obviously a reason we had to fire some people. »

Chester says although he only has 17 players, Friday’s Super League game against Wigan at Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington will take place

Chester says he was forced to bring in a player, second rower Matty Ashurst, on paternal leave simply to build the squad

“These things keep happening and it’s hard work by the minute,” he added. “You’re getting ready for a game on Friday and half of your squad is pulled from under your feet in the last 24 hours

“Last night I had 16 players and I had to give Matty a phone call asking him to join us for today for the team race. His wife had a baby on Monday, but he came today and he’s fit and ready to go  »

In addition to Covid withdrawals, Chester lost winger Liam Kay and mainstay Eddie Battye to injuries sustained in last week’s loss at Huddersfield

There are five Betfred Super League fixtures this week, all played at Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington, and four of them live on Sky Sports, as follows:

Hull KR v Leeds Rhinos (24:30 – available to season ticket holders on the Our League app)
