UK summer time has officially ended for another year – with the British changing their clock by one hour to mark the start of winter
But why do we change the clocks twice a year, what does it symbolize and how did it start? Continue reading
Yes Brits will gain an extra hour of sleep tonight as the clocks roll back, which signifies the start of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
This means that the rest of the year and the start of 2021 will see darker mornings after the clocks return
But the British are losing an hour each March, with clocks progressing to put the UK on BST or British Summer Time
The first recording of daylight saving time came from builder William Willet, who was « irritated by the ‘waste’ of useful daylight during the summer, according to historians
M Willet said: « Although the sun rose for hours as he rode his horse through Chislehurst and Petts Wood, people were still sleeping in their beds »
He proposed the change of clocks in a pamphlet called The Waste of Daylight which was published in 1907
Unfortunately, M Willet didn’t see his idea come to fruition and died in 1915 – the year before the first clock change in 1916
Nowadays, the return of clocks is a signal of the start of the winter season – and the shorter, darker days to come
