A US Air Force B-52 bomber sent a distress signal after an in-flight emergency over Gloucestershire, it was reported
According to the FlightRadar 24 tracking website, the plane transmitted a « squawk code 770, indicating a general emergency, near Tewkesbury, UK »
The planes flew over central Gloucester, towards Hartpury, Ashleworth and Tewkesbury, before returning over Up Hatherley, Shurdington, Brockworth Hucclecote and Barnwood
Two of the planes were Boeing B-52 Stratofortresses, with identities BALOO51 and BALOO52 and both were flying at an altitude of over 9,000 feet
Currently there are six US Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bombers based at RAF Fairford, Cotswolds
The US Air Force recently announced that B-52s from the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota and operating from RAF Fairford, were participating in over-sea operations Black
The mission was designed to train US forces to operate and communicate while integrating with joint, NATO and partner nations
The B-52 – capable of carrying 20 nuclear cruise missiles – has been at the forefront of the American defense arsenal since the mid-1950s
The B-52s were so iconic they became synonymous with the Cold War – deployed in conflicts from Vietnam to the Gulf War and Afghanistan
They even became a source of inspiration for an American rock band of the same name
Much of the interest in the B-52s stems from their devastating payload – which was seen up close when several of the bombers were deployed to RAF Fairford, Gloucs, in 2017
Anyone can punch ten times the power of the nuclear bomb that devastated Hiroshima in 1945
And while moving at a relatively slow speed of 650 mph, the behemoths are difficult to eliminate from the sky due to their operating cap of 50,000
