World News – GB – US to execute first woman in nearly 70 years

A woman convicted of fatally strangling a pregnant woman, opening her body and kidnapping her baby is expected to be the first inmate to be put to death by the U.S. government in more than six decades, the Department of Justice said on Friday. Justice

Lisa Montgomery is to be executed by lethal injection on December 8 at the Federal Correctional Complex in Terre Haute, Indiana. She is believed to be the ninth federal inmate to be put to death since the Department of Justice resumed executions in July after a hiatus in almost 20 years

Montgomery was convicted of the murder of Bobbie Jo Stinnett, 23, in the town of Skidmore, northwest Missouri, in December 2004

Montgomery drove from his Kansas home to Stinnett’s house in Skidmore on the pretext of adopting a terrier puppy, prosecutors said

When she arrived home, Montgomery used a rope to strangle Stinnett, who was eight months pregnant

Prosecutors said Montgomery removed the baby from Stinnett’s body, took the child with her and attempted to pass off the girl as his own

Montgomery’s attorneys argued she suffered from delusions when she killed Stinnett, but a jury rejected her defense

Her lawyers also argued that she suffered from pseudocyesis, which leads a woman to mistakenly believe that she is pregnant and to show outward signs of pregnancy

The Justice Department also scheduled the execution of a man convicted of the 1999 murder of two youth ministers in Texas on Friday Brandon Bernard, 40, to be executed by lethal injection on December 10

Bernard and his co-accused, Christopher Vialva, were convicted of the 1999 kidnapping and murder of Todd and Stacie Bagley, an Iowa couple who had stopped to use a pay phone in Killeen, Texas

Vialva pulled out a gun, forced the couple into the trunk and drove for several hours, stopping at ATMs to withdraw cash and attempting to pawn the alliance of the woman, prosecutors say

The two victims were shot in the head and placed in the trunk of their car, which was then set on fire

Federal executions resumed on July 14 with the execution of former white supremacist Daniel Lewis Lee Since then six more people have been put to death and another man, Orlando Hall, is expected to be executed this month next

Anti-death penalty groups say President Donald Trump is pushing for executions during election season in an attempt to build a reputation as a leader of law and order

Before executions resumed this summer, federal authorities had executed only three prisoners in the past 56 years
