Lee Selby’s lingering hopes of another world title fight could have ended in a split decision loss to George Kambosos Jr at Wembley Arena
The former world champion received a generous 115-114 score from one of the judges, but Kambosos Jr aptly sealed the victory with scores of 118-110 and 116-112, in an eliminator final for the IBF belt, which is currently held by unified lightweight world champion Teofimo Lopez
Starting on the back foot, Selby sent out telemetry jabs while circling Kambosos Jr, who responded with a few stiff left hands in the opener.
Selby advanced cautiously into the second round, still pushing his jab, but it was cut with hooks from Kambosos Jr, who landed a clean right hand in the third
The Welshman showed more ambition in the fourth, hitting right hands, while Selby seemed to frustrate Kambosos Jr in the fifth as he sent out stiff jabs before walking away
But Kambosos Jr added more spite to his work in the sixth, hammering hooks up close, and Selby had to withstand resentful body shots in the seventh
A firm right hand caught up with Selby in the eighth as he struggled to breach Kambosos Jr, who continued to strike back with fierce combinations in the ninth
In the closing rounds Selby was forced to hold his ground as he searched for a big right hand, but Kambosos Jr fought back in the final round to secure a world title shot
