JJ Williams has been hailed as « one of the greatest wings to play for Llanelli, Wales and the British & Irish Lions » after his death at 72

Williams, who was christened John James but known to the rugby world by his initials, has also been described as « a man who inspired an entire generation » as tributes poured in for one of the best game finishers

He scored 12 tries in 30 appearances for Wales and won the Grand Slams in 1976 and 1978, as well as four Triple Crowns between 1976 and 1979

The Welsh Rugby Union said in a statement: ‘JJ Williams, one of the biggest kites to play for Llanelli, Wales and the British & Irish Lions, has died aged 72

Williams toured South Africa in 1974 and New Zealand in 1977 with the Lions and his testing exploits put him in the tourist record books

Lions said on social media: “We have lost a true legend of the game – RIP JJ Williams A man who inspired a generation with his incredible running and finishing skills

He tied David Duckham’s record of six tries in a single game for the Lions in a 97-0 win over Southwestern Districts in 1974

Williams scored four tries in the 3-0 Test Series triumph over South Africa, becoming the second Lions player to score two tries twice in a test

He scored another try in New Zealand three years later and his five-try try is only second behind Ireland’s Tony O’Reilly, who crossed paths six times on the 1955 Lions tours and 1959

Saturday will mark the 48th anniversary of Llanelli’s 9-3 victory over the All Blacks at Stradey Park – a game JJ played – and the day will also see the city’s Parc y Scarlets host the Six Nations clash. of Wales with Scotland

Clubs across town have lined up to pay tribute, with his former club Llanelli posting: “It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of the great JJ Williams We would like to offer our deepest condolences to his family, his friends and former teammates «

Bridgend Ravens, another former Williams club, tweeted: “Everyone at Bridgend Ravens is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player JJ WilliamsOur hearts go out to JJ’s family and friends at this difficult time « 

Gamers, politicians and people in the entertainment industry were among those who tweeted their respects in the wake of the news, with former Wales and Lions wing Shane Williams posting: ‘I sorry to hear that JJ Williams has passed away! It was a pleasure to have shared your jersey « 

He wrote on Twitter: “Our amazing father passed away peacefully this morning As a family we would like to thank everyone for the lovely messages and tributes Dad has lived life to the end and he will be missed for always I love you daddy x »
