Boris Johnson is expected to announce a new lockdown will be put in place after government scientists presented him with NHS data sinister, he had no choice

Boris Johnson is expected to announce a second national lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus, but it is unclear how severe the restrictions will be

It has been reported that government scientists have presented the Prime Minister with NHS data that is so grim he had no choice

However, no final decision appears to have been taken and stricter regional measures – such as the introduction of level 4 – are also being considered

But what will the new restrictions mean? Which businesses will be ordered to shut down and will vulnerable people need to protect themselves again?

Sage committee members revealed grim numbers showing the killer bug is spreading ‘much’ faster than even their original ‘worst case’ prediction

The government has also been warned that some hospitals may not even have enough staff to deal with additional patients on top of normal NHS winter strains as flu season approaches

Scientists, backed by Health Secretary Matt Hancock and Senior Minister Michael Gove, said the virus was set to kill 85,000 people this winter and it was too late for a so-called « Circuit break »

In mid-October, when Labor leader Keir Starmer called for a nationwide lockout of circuit breakers, a government source said: ‘Keir Starmer is a shameless opportunist playing political games amid a global pandemic »

Prime Minister and Chancellor Rishi Sunak reportedly fought for a nationwide lockdown for fear of leaving the economy in pieces

The government must now make plans for the new lockdown over the weekend before Mr. Johnson is speaking to the nation

Science advisers believe all areas will need to enter Level 3 – some facing even tighter controls

If the entire country is forced to visit Level 3 pubs, bars and restaurants, casinos, gymnasiums, recreation centers and other non-essential businesses risk being closed

Under current level 3 rules, households and bubbles are not allowed to mix indoors or outdoors

It is expected that people will be urged to avoid travel outside their region and to stay overnight elsewhere will be banned

Unlike the first closed schools, universities and nurseries will be allowed to remain open to everyone

During the last lockdown, schools were only open to vulnerable students and those of key workers, but a second lockdown appears to suggest it will be open to all young people

However, there is also the possibility of tweaking the system so here is a fourth level

A high level government source said: « At level 3 everything is subject to discussion outside of schools, so level 4 is a weird concept in that sense »

During the last lockdown 22 million people who were told to « protect » because they were classified as vulnerable

It’s unclear if this will be the case if the nation enters a second lockdown

The news comes at the end of a week in which UK coronavirus deaths reached levels last seen in May

Today, the death toll from Covid-19 has increased by 274, while infections have increased by more than 24,000

This is the biggest increase in the number of deaths on Friday since May 29, when 274 deaths were also recorded

Martin McKee, professor of European public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and member of Independent Sage, said: ‘We have unfortunately let the infection get out of hand and as a result we are going to need to turn the situation around, otherwise it will continue to increase, more people will fall seriously ill and more people will die

‘The sooner we impose tighter restrictions, the better I see MPs saying’ rates are low in my area so we shouldn’t be doing anything ‘It’s not about whether the cases are weak, but increasing rapidly

A government-funded study called REACT-1 said it was 96,000, the Bureau of National Statistics estimated it to be nearly 52,000 and research from King’s College London suggested it was was 43,569

A nationwide lockdown across England would replace the current three-tier system that is in place

Again tonight, it was announced that Carlisle was heading towards Level 2 lockdown measures, with restrictions coming into effect in a few hours at midnight

Residents of Carlisle and surrounding areas will no longer be allowed to meet people from another household indoors or to gather in groups of more than six people outdoors
