The jobs crisis in the hospitality sector deepened yesterday as Whitbread announced up to 6,000 redundancies across its hotels and restaurants.
The operator of Premier Inn and Beefeater said that it was responding to the end of the furlough scheme next month as well as forecasts that demand will remain subdued.
Alison Brittain, 55, chief executive, said that the end of the furlough scheme, which has been paying 14 per cent of the group’s wage bill, was “a significant moment” that had “focused our minds” on the need for cuts.
She said that she was not expecting the government to extend furlough but urged the chancellor to consider making the cut in VAT permanent and extend the business rates holiday by a year. “That would
