★★★★☆If you made a reflective classic driven by a sense of spiritual searching, that went on to become a landmark album of the singer-songwriter era, is there any purpose in doing it all over again?
Cat Stevens covers his 1970 masterpiece here and the good news is that he has resisted the urge to modernise. With the original guitarist Alun Davies and producer Paul Samwell-Smith on board, environmental clarion call Where Do the Children Play? sounds more prescient than ever and Miles From Nowhere retains its profundity, even under a new, country-rock setting.
Some things should not be tampered with — Wild World really didn’t need to be turned into a New Orleans rag — but this curious revisit does serve to remind us
