Local Government Minister Shelley Hancock set to remove Coast Central Council and appoint interim administrator due to her financial situation
Hancock said today (October 21) that the NSW government will advance $ 6 to Council2M to cover salary costs and late payments to suppliers
She said she will issue today to the Coastal Central Council a notice of intention to suspend it and appoint an interim administrator
The Council will have seven days to make a presentation of the reasons why it should not be suspended and an independent director appointed as required by the Law on Local Government
The suspension would apply to the mayor and councilors but would not affect council staff and day-to-day operations
Hancock said that given the Council’s abject inability to cope with the consequences of its own financial mismanagement, the government has no choice but to ensure that funds are provided to deal with urgent expenses
« It’s hard to think of a more fundamental failure of a Council than paying your own staff, » she said
« In the two weeks since uncovering the Council’s financial difficulties, all the Council has done is write letters, issue press releases and set up a finance committee
« The Council hit a new low last night when it decided again to approach the government for a bailout at the risk that Council staff will not be paid
« Using its own staff as bargaining chip is reprehensible from a governing body that has failed to address its own financial failures
Central Coast Parliamentary Secretary Adam Crouch welcomed the move and said he was appalling that the Council’s financial situation had deteriorated to such an extent that the employment of more than 2,000 people was Game
« In recent weeks, the Council has hidden behind the cloak of confidential meetings, rather than representing the community with openness and transparency, » Crouch said
: Unfortunately, the Council has yet to provide the NSW government with information indicating its true financial situation, but the road to recovery is known to be long and difficult «
The move comes as Mayor Lisa Matthews publicly announced her loss of confidence in Council CEO Gary Murphy, claiming councilors received inadequate information about the Council’s financial condition and uncovered the whole extent of the problem only last night when it was revealed that the Council would struggle to pay its own staff
“In light of the long-term issues that may have grown out of control within the operational division of the Board, the only course of action now available is to insist on a new CEO to manage day-to-day operations , ”Cr Matthews said
