Health officials issued a terrible warning about a bad batch of illicit drugs that left six young people in hospital
According to SA Health, the patients – all aged 20 to 30 – were rushed to Flinders Medical Center on Thursday morning after an overdose
Emergency services clinical director Dr Andrew Blyth said the three men and three women had all used GHB
« Patients do not appear to be related to each other due to their presence at an event or gathering and it is very unusual for us to see so many isolated cases entering the emergency department at the same time » , did he declare
Blyth has warned anyone who has taken liquid medicine to report to the nearest emergency room immediately, even if they feel well and have no symptoms
GHB is a colorless and odorless liquid of varying concentration, usually sold in small bottles or vials
Symptoms of overdose including loss of consciousness for three to four hours, confusion, irritation and restlessness, irregular or shallow breathing, fainting and memory loss, hallucinations or vomiting
« We know that an overdose of GHB can lead to cardio-respiratory arrest and the toxicity depends on the dose, the person’s weight, tolerance, individual sensitivity and other substances taken, » said Blyth
« Due to the high level of presentations we have seen today, we are urgently warning anyone considering taking this drug of the current increased risk in the community »
Two of the six patients are in serious but stable condition in the intensive care unit, while four are in stable condition
