French film about tween girls forming dance group called’ prurient ‘in Tyler County lawsuit Netflix defends story as social commentary against sexualization

Netflix defended the controversial Cuties movie after it emerged the streaming giant was facing criminal charges in Texas for the allegedly « obscene » portrayal of children in the film

Cuties follows an 11-year-old Senegalese living in Paris who rebels against the traditions of her conservative family when she becomes fascinated by a « free-spirited dance team »

Tyler County, Texas grand jury charged company with « promoting obscene visual material depicting a child » Indictment claims Cuties appeals to « fierce interest in sex » and that the material has « no serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value »

A Netflix representative told PA: « Cuties is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children This accusation is baseless and we support the film »

The film became the target of protesters after Netflix admitted that it had used « inappropriate artwork » to market it on the streaming platform Netflix was subsequently the subject of wider attacks and a campaign for subscribers to cancel their membership

Following the backlash, the company encouraged people to watch the film before passing judgment. Writer-director Maimouna Doucouré said she saw it as « a deeply feminist film with a militant message » which is  » a mirror of today’s society, a mirror that is sometimes difficult to look at ”

She said she got the idea after seeing a group of 11-year-old girls dance in a « you would see in a music video » way at a neighborhood rally in Paris The director said that she spent a year and a half meeting with hundreds of tweens to find out what they thought of their femininity in today’s society and what they thought of their self-image in the age of media social

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January this year, where Doucouré won the World Cinema Dramatic Achievement Award

The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Netflix boycott calls would be a ‘flash in the pan’ after first hit Wells Fargo analyst Steven Cahall suggests some 2 million subscribers have abandoned the service to US and Canada over the past three months, well above the streaming service’s normal « churn » rate, but the cause was unclear, as many more subscribers had joined the platform during lockdown
