59-year-old man in critical condition after shark attack in north Queensland on Sunday
Rick Bettua was fishing underwater with friends along the Great Barrier Reef when he was bitten in the leg by what is believed to be a bull shark
The former U.S. Navy master diver was airlifted to Townsville University Hospital, where he has since undergone surgery
« He had suffered a major bite in the upper left thigh and also suffered significant blood loss, » she said on Monday.
« He was able to apply a makeshift tourniquet before the medical team arrived and this undoubtedly helped save his life. »
