Tony Mokbel to launch freedom offer after serving just 13 years of his 30-year sentence for drug trafficking, court said
The kingpin of Melbourne gangs, who was portrayed in the TV series Underbelly, is appealing her conviction for the Lawyer X scandal that recently rocked the Victorian legal system
The 55-year-old, who narrowly survived a stab in prison last year, is one of many convicted gangsters seeking to have their sentences overturned after police used criminal defense lawyer Nicola Gobbo as an informant

Mokbel and his new legal counsel faced the Court of Appeal on Wednesday in hopes of starting the process
Ms Gobbo had represented Mokbel in three major criminal trials while acting as a confidential police informant
Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews has called a Royal Commission on Police Informant Management in 2018, with full findings due in November this year
The investigation has already indicated that Ms. Gobbo’s behavior may constitute a breach of her duty to the administration of justice, the court and her client
« We have been pursuing disclosure for many years and have finally come to a point where we believe we have sufficient resources to appeal, » lawyer Richard Maidment QC said during the hearing on the directions , reported the Herald Sun
‘Through M Mokbel, he’s been trying to disclose for a very long time
But Clerk Ian Irving has spoken out in favor of a request by state and federal prosecutors asking for more time to dissect the 14,000 pages of documents involved in the case
The candidacy for freedom comes after Mokbel nearly died after being stabbed in a prison yard at Barwon Prison in Victoria in February 2019
Mokbel was stabbed seven times by two men with cutlery and sharp wires that kicked him in the head, knocking out his teeth
As the assault caught the attention of other inmates and prison guards, the men could be heard shouting, ‘You are not an executor, that’s what you get by talking to the screw you f ** king dog ‘
The attack was so violent that a court refused to release footage of it to the media
