Victoria has reported 16 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths as Melbourne awaits easing of lockdown restrictions

Sunday statistics bring the death toll from the pandemic in the state to 784 and the national figure to 872

The 14-day moving average continues to improve, with 221 for Melbourne and 06 for regional Victoria

14-day averages for cases with unknown source also fell to 31 for metropolitan Melbourne and zero for regional areas

Latest data cases come as state government prepares to announce what freedoms can be returned to locked up Melburnians

The state’s « roadmap » announced in early September is expected to be changed on Sunday following better-than-expected progress in tackling the spread of the virus

Many will cling to the words of the Prime Minister during what has become a dark tradition of dominant Sunday press conferences

According to the original plans that were to go into effect from Monday, a 9 p.m. curfew would remain, as well as the 5 km travel limit and take out food only for restaurants and cafes

Restrictions on public gatherings would be easier to allow up to five people from a maximum of two households to meet outdoors for social interactions

Daycare and kindergarten would reopen and some students would return to class in the fourth quarter

The expected easing of the lockdown coincides with the dramatic resignation of Jenny Mikakos as Minister of Health on Saturday

Martin Foley was sworn in to replace Ms Mikakos, who resigned the day after hearing the prime minister tell the hotel’s quarantine commission of inquiry that she was responsible for the Ministry of Health and Social Services, who was ultimately responsible for managing the quarantine program

The hotel’s quarantine program failed as private security guards violated infection control, causing the virus to spread throughout the community and a devastating second wave

« I am deeply sorry for the situation in which the Victorians find themselves In good conscience, I do not think my action has led to this, » wrote Ms Mikakos in her resignation letter

M Andrews rebuffed reporters’ suggestions on Saturday he should also step down, saying he would not run away from a challenge
