A zookeeper was killed by a group of bears at a wildlife park in China as horrified visitors on a tour bus watched him

The Shanghai Wildlife Park confirmed that a staff member was attacked on Saturday afternoon while working in the « wilderness area » where dangerous animals such as bears and tigers roam relatively freely

Park visitors aboard a tour bus in this section of the park saw bears running towards the staff member and filmed parts of the tragedy as it unfolded

Chinese public tabloid Global Times reported that an excavator working nearby had headed towards the animals in an attempt to move the bears and save the person, but it was too late

The video has since been widely shared on Chinese social network Weibo and viewed over 658,000 times in the past 18 hours

The video sparked a lot of discussion about park safety protocols and asked how bears could approach the worker

The park released a statement saying it was investigating the case and had since closed its section dangerous for wildlife

« Our park is extremely saddened by such a tragedy, expressing its sincere condolences to the deceased, expressing its deep sympathy to the families of the deceased and apologizing for the inconvenience caused to tourists, » the park said

Visitors who purchased tickets to the park after the event are eligible for a refund, according to state media
