Bruno Soares announced that his current partner, Mate Pavic, has decided to end his working relationship so that the Brazilian can reunite with Briton Jamie Murray.
Soares and Murray together won two Grand Slam titles in 2016 – Murray’s only success at this level in men’s doubles.
While Murray and Neal Skupski – the Liverpudlian looking for a new partner – didn’t land any big silverware in their 18 month period, Soares won the US Open with Pavic this year and are currently the best doubles in the world.
And he expressed his surprise at Pavic’s decision to end their partnership in order to team up with Croatian compatriot Nikola Mektic.
« I mean, I think he wanted to play with Mektic. They are very good friends, both from the same country, the Olympics are coming up.
« I don’t know. To be honest, when he came to me, I was a bit disappointed. I told him and didn’t want to continue the conversation. So I said, okay, if you want to do this after the year, go ahead.
‘I don’t know if he had this in mind before and then the results just didn’t go in his favor to take such a move and that got to a point where he had to do it, but, yeah , I was very surprised. But as I said, you have to respect that everyone thinks differently and you have to understand.
« I was a little sad for myself after having had such a great year. Like you said, fight for no. 1, to be the best team after the break.
“But life goes on. You know, all I can do right now is work hard and keep trying to do my thing. ‘
It opened the door to Murray and Soares to reunite, and the older Murray brother quickly tried to reunite with his former partner.
« Mate came up to me late last week and decided he wanted to break up and he had other plans for 2021, » added Soares. Jamie found out the news. Came to talk to me about my plans. To be honest, I didn’t really have any plans because I was trying to focus on the pretty big tournament here.
“But here too I have to look for a partner at some point. It seemed like a great idea to me. I really like Jamie as a person, as a player. We had a lot of success together.
« I think we are both more experienced and mature. I’m really looking forward to the next year. ‘
Soare and Murray’s partnership ended at the 2019 French Open, and the 38-year-old Brazilian likened their relationship to marriage while hoping their intimacy will give them a quick start to the next season.
« It’s like marriage, you know. Sometimes it’s just a routine in the end and it’s all about you and I think in the end it was, « Soares said.
« I think Jamie needed a change right now. I appreciate him because he was always very honest, and when he came and spoke to me, I understood perfectly.
« I think to me the first thing you have to do is be happy in court, and if you don’t feel really happy you have to do something to be happy. « . He thought the change was necessary.
Emily Atack had a threesome with a married couple but ended it when they both fell in love with her
« We still play great tennis. At the moment I think I think it’s not the experience with different partners. I guess it’s just time. You mature, you play better, you keep improving.
« I think Jamie has improved a lot since we played, which is good. I don’t know if I have improved a lot. I’m getting older so he has to come with the youth he’s not so young anymore.
« But I think one advantage we have is that a lot of teams will change for the next season. « . Me and Jamie, we are not really a change. We know each other very well and I don’t think it will be long before we click. I think that’s something positive on our side and makes us even more competitive. ‘
