World News – UK – Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds makes offer to buy club from the Football League

By Patrick McLennan

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator Rob McElhenney are in talks to buy Welsh football club Wrexham AFC, the club have confirmed

Wrexham currently plays in the Football League, the fifth tier of football in England and Wales and, when crowds are allowed to attend matches, it has an average attendance of just over 5,000

In a statement, fan-owned club Wrexham AFC revealed it had held a special general meeting to consider Reynolds and McElhenney’s candidacy

The Wrexham Supporters Trust Board « confirmed this morning 975% of voters (1223 members) voted in favor of the resolution

« As a result, discussions with the proposed bidders will continue and we are able to confirm both individuals interested in investing in Wrexham AFC

« Rob McElhenney is an American actor, director, producer and screenwriter, best known as the creator of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

« Ryan Reynolds is an award-winning Canadian actor, writer, producer and entrepreneur whose credits include Marvel’s Deadpool »

The board wrote that M McElhenney and M Reynolds « would present their vision for Wrexham AFC and offer members a vote at a second extraordinary general meeting »

To add another level of weirdness to the story, Reynolds responded to a random tweet from 2012 indicating that one day he might show up in Wrexham saying, « Yeah, you never know »

Some of the most notable features of the Wrexham AFC include the oldest international football stadium in the world (built in 1864 and still in use) and the fact that they eliminated reigning FA Cup holders Arsenal , of the cup the following season in 1992
