World News – UK – Mads Mikkelsen has confirmed he will replace Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts 3

Mads Mikkelsen has been confirmed to take on the role of Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3 directed by Johnny Depp.

Warner Bros confirmed news that the character would be re-cast after asking Johnny to step down from the role.

Johnny, 57, had played the role of Grindelwald since 2018 after replacing Colin Farrell but was asked to step down after losing his libel trial with ex-wife Amber Heard.

Mads, 54, had been hotly referred to the role, but as recently as last week he had claimed he was in the dark about whether or not he had been approached for the job.

The Chaos Walking Star told IGN, « Oh, that’s based on rumors as we speak. So I know as much as you do from the newspapers. So I’m waiting for that call. ‘

Johnny had announced his resignation following the verdict on his defamation case when a judge found there was « overwhelming evidence » that he attacked his ex-wife.

The star of the Pirates of the Caribbean had told his followers: “In light of recent events, I would like to make the following brief statement.

“First of all, I would like to thank everyone who has given me their support and loyalty. I am humble and moved by your many messages of love and concern, especially in the last few days.

« Second, I want you to know that I was asked by Warner Bros to step down from my role as Grindelwald on Fantastic Beasts, and I respected and agreed to that request.

“Finally, I would like to say that. The surreal ruling by the UK court will not change my battle for the truth, and I confirm that I plan to appeal.

« My resolve remains strong and I want to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and career will not be determined at this point. thank you for reading. ‘

It was also announced that Johnny would receive his full salary for the role due to his « pay or play » contract, despite having only shot one scene.
