When it comes to recent history, Newcastle United will face Premier League closest rivals tonight at Selhurst Park.

Since Newcastle returned to the Premier League in 2017, only one place has separated the teams in the Premier League table in the last three seasons.

The Magpies took tenth place in 2017/18 and ousted the eleventh Eagles due to the goal difference. United slipped to 13th the following season. Seated off, but it was Palace that was in the 12th. and landed just above them last season. Newcastle finished 13th again. Place – a place above today’s opponents.

There is a lot of emphasis on today’s game. If Newcastle is to move forward this season and ease some of the growing pressure on Steve Bruce, they have to beat the teams in and around them. No team fits this category better than Crystal Palace.

It will very likely be Roy Hodgson’s last season in charge, and the vibe in South London feels like the seasoned manager’s time at the club is slowly passing by.

The situation at Newcastle is a little different but there is no doubt that results and improved performances will have to come soon if Bruce is to keep calls from rising so this season can be his last on Tyneside.

Both Crystal Palace and Newcastle have become the archetypal midfield team, but it’s more of a damn charge against United that they gladly accepted that.

Of course, it must be recognized that Palace is now in the Premier League for the eighth straight Premier League compared to the fourth in Newcastle and many observers will rightly point out that recent history suggests that Palace is a good benchmark for United is aim and build.

The problem is the lack of progress in building that foundation. Newcastle appear to have gone backwards this season and will face Andros Townsend, who left Newcastle for Crystal Palace in 2016, and Ebe Eze, who was linked to the Magpies this summer before joining Hodgson.

In terms of history, the size of the St. James’ Park and the sheer scale of Newcastle’s fanatical fan base in a one-club town should turn London’s smallest top-tier club into relative insignificance (though it does) love Palace too).

Newcastle has all the potential to become a real force in English football again, as it was under Sir Bobby Robson and the Champions League evenings and Kevin Keegan’s entertainers. as if they had threatened a season under Alan Pardew and as if they believed that they would eventually be under Rafa Benitez.

Newcastle could and should be twice as big as tonight’s opponents. They should be the team that is more competitive at the top of the table and United should try to exert their style of play on the game rather than reacting to the line-up of their opponents.

Until recently, Palace was known as the yo-yo club between the top two divisions, but the terrible reality is that they are now Newcastle’s benchmark for survival in the Premier League. On the way to today’s clash, it will be the eagles, not the magpies, that are clear favorites to win.

Until Newcastle is finally taken over, teams like Crystal Palace, which unfortunately only exist to survive, will unfortunately always be the basis for ambitions for a Magpie team that should have designs to move up the table.
