World news – UK – Simon Yates withdraws from Giro d’Italia after positive coronavirus test

His team, Mitchelton-Scott, revealed that Yates was tested after experiencing « very mild symptoms » after the seventh stage of Friday’s race

A statement from the team read: « The 28-year-old has been isolated in his private room during the process and is transported to safety by an ambulance organized for a period of quarantine where the team can offer the best possible care

They added that all other riders on the team and staff have since tested negative and will continue to be monitored

Team doctor Matteo Beltemacchi told the team’s website, greenedgecyclingcom: « Simon displayed a very mild temperature on Friday evening during our routine temperature checks, which were carried out three times a day during the Giro d’Italia

« In accordance with the team’s Racesafe Covid-19 policy, he was isolated in his room and we immediately requested a rapid test using the RCS’s service offering, which returned positive

« Simon’s health remains our main concern and fortunately his symptoms remain very mild and he is otherwise in good health We would like to thank the RCS for their support in organizing rapid tests and transporting him.

« All other runners and staff returned negative results and were allowed to continue racing, but as a precaution we will be monitoring the situation closely and undergoing further testing in the coming days »

Yates, winner of the 2018 Vuelta a Espana, entered the Giro as one of the pre-race favorites after his victory at Tirreno-Adriatico last month

But he struggled on Monday’s third stage on Etna, finishing more than four minutes behind stage winner Jonathan Caicedo and more than three minutes behind the main group of overall contenders

The driver from Bury was 21st overall, three minutes and 52 seconds ahead of race leader Joao Almeida, after Friday’s seventh stage in Brindisi

Yates’ exit means the two British contenders for the race are eliminated after Geraint Thomas of the Ineos Grenadiers suffered a fractured pelvis in a freak accident with a drink bottle lost in the neutralized zone of the third stage, retiring from the race a day later
