The General Services Administration names President-elect Joe Biden the « obvious winner » of the 2020 presidential election, a move that could allow the transition process to finally begin after being delayed by the Trump administration. It comes as Biden announced multiple nominations for his cabinet on Monday. Yamiche Alcindor is in discussion with Judy Woodruff.
And now that some key developments in the presidential transition are late, our White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor-Yamiche is joining me again.
Judy, the moment we’ve all been waiting for, President-elect Joe Biden has been waiting for has come.
The head of General Services Administration has now identified the transition. That means that this official transition begins. In a letter we just received, she writes that, among other things, she will release $ 6. 3 million to Joe Biden to begin this transition.
This happened, as sources told me, because there was increasing pressure on the GOP side to address this. Senators like Rob Portman and Lamar Alexander and others said the president had exhausted all of his legal options.
The other thing to note is that President Trump continues to fight. So Emily Murphy says she is not influenced by politics on this matter. She says that she must identify and determine the winner of this election using trusted sources. And she’s essentially saying that Joe Biden is the winner here.
But we should watch out for President Trump’s reaction. You – he could possibly fire you. He could also try to stop this process. But officially it has finally started.
This was weeks in development, of course, and people across the country, including Joe Biden himself, said this was long overdue.
And, as you point out, this is something that has been expected since shortly after Joe Biden was named the winner of the presidential election. It comes two weeks after that now.
