Long Island diocese seeks bankruptcy protection to face legal fees resulting from multiple sexual abuse lawsuits

The Diocese of Rockville Center says it needs a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing to restructure and help facilitate the resolution of dozens of victims of sexual abuse who have sued for sexual misconduct under the Child Victims Act

« We believe this process offers the only way to ensure a fair and equitable outcome for all involved, including abuse survivors whose compensation settlements will be resolved by the courts, » Bishop said. Bars in a press release

Last year, the diocese filed a lawsuit claiming that the Child Victims Act that relaxed statutes of limitations in sexual assault cases violated the New York state constitution

In 2018, the diocese agreed to pay claims to more than 200 victims of sexual abuse, before the adoption of the law on child victims and even more legal proceedings

Rockville Center not the first to seek bankruptcy protection under the weight of sexual misconduct lawsuits The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester was the first to do so in New York City
